OBSERVER-MOBITEL..... Going down memory lane for the past 34 years, the SUNDAY OBSERVER now with MOBITEL has done a great service to the schoolboy cricketers by duly recognising their capabilities.
Former Test opener and wicketkeeper Romesh Kaluwitharana says the OBSERVER-MOBITEL competition has helped to maintain a steady influx of top cricketers. This year sees the 35th contest. Looking back during the past three decades the competition has maintained a high level and has also produced many Test captains and cricketers.

Sri Lanka’s first ever inter-school cricket award show will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2013. It is with pride and honour that we announce the launch of the 35th Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year contest.
Twice Sunday Observer Schoolboy Cricketer (1983-1984) Roshan Mahanama aired his views on the contest saying that it is a remarkable one that gives due recognition to the deserving cricketer for the future. Mahanama aired his views on the Sunday Observer – Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the year 2012.
Scoring a double hundred in a cricket match is a highly remarkable performance, and doing it on debut in a Test match is something beyond that and unique. Brendon Kuruppu who won the runner-up award for the Best Batsman in the year 1978 Ranjan Madugalle was judged the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year.
"During my 11-year-old career as an administrator in various positions at the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association, I was delighted to see many emerging school players finally ending representing the country at the highest level. It has also happened before I was involved in the contest and I sincerely hope that the trend will continue for many years".
The foundation laid by talented schoolboy cricketers will be further consolidated by conducting contests like the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year as these contests will give the necessary confidence for the player to go up the ladder of success.

Former Sri Lanka Test opening bowler and the present Chairman Selectors Ashantha de Mel, while commending the Sunday Observer/Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Show lamented of the drastic drop of the standard of school cricket.
